Salem State Champs - TOP 10 REASONS TO GO 4 IT

With a bit of a lull until the next big Utah tri (Jordanelle on Aug 10th), we thought we'd list our TOP 10 REASONS why you should join the fun at this year's State Champs race, RaceTri's Salem Spring on Sep 7th!

10) Classic venue, 17th straight running! If you've been a participant over years, just coming back will give you that gushy feeling of adrenaline mixed with butterflies.

9) It's cool when races have multiple distance options to choose from, but that said, it makes it tough to congregate together afterwards. Single distance, short-course races with open water swims are very rare, and will facilitate a fun post-race celebration.

8) #WITNESSTHEFITNESS: a late-season race you can test yourself at... let it rip and see what you've got!

7) With the iconic bridge, 2 loop bike course, and a park as the venue, arguably the most spectator and family friendly race on the local calendar.

6) As we did when TriUtah's Brineman hosted the State Champs last year, there's a points bonus as part of the season rankings calculation for everyone who races Salem. It's not massive, but is definitely enough to move the needle if you're into that sort of thing.

5) Don't be intimidated by "State Champs"... sure, we hope there are some good battles and friendly competition, but this race is open to EVERYONE. Unlike an Ironman or 70.3, everyone will be done close enough together anyways!

4) Utah Tri Buzz is always working through our SWAG hit list... if you've been eluding us, come and collect!

3) Great race and venue for beginners and veterans alike. Being only a Sprint distance race (no Olympic distance), there's always a competitive field, but at the same time the 800m swim in calm waters, ~12 mi bike and 5k run is a great event for beginners.

2) One of the coolest finishes around, up over the bridge you swam under earlier.

1) Aaron Shamy pre-race speech. Forever #1!

So hope to see you there, and bring a friend or three.  Not racing?? Volunteer! The more the merrier, RaceTri would surely love your support.

Results Breakdown: Echo 2019

Congrats all!

Echo marked Race #7 of the Utah Triathlon Championship Series, with the rest of the series being:

#8 Jordanelle Olympic (Aug 10th)
#9 Brineman Half (Sep 7th)
S.C.  Salem Sprint (STATE CHAMPS) (Sep 7th)
#10 Kokopelli Olympic (Sep 21st)

Keep in mind that most of these events have non-Championship Series options as well (Jordanelle sprint, Brineman sprint & olympic, Kokopelli sprint). For these our emphasis is less on results, rankings, etc and more on getting people out to experience triathlon. Note also that the State Champs race is for all abilities and experience levels!

In general we hope you'll support the local race scene, and let's continue making 2019 an awesome season.

Below is the results breakdown for Echo, and this post explains what this is if you need a refresher.

Check out Victor Villarreal's site www.letterv.net for a ton of awesome pics like the one above from Echo and other local races!

Note - we had to back into combined transition times because the source showed only swim, bike, run, overall.

Echo Preview!

Eight days til Echo!
This is one of Utah's most legendary triathlons, and we hope you'll join the party as a participant or volunteer.

As you probably heard from TriUtah, due to construction there's a slightly different "venue" this year than years past, simply 1.5 miles up the road at the Echo State Park North Shore.

Long story short, after checking it out yesterday we believe this course is even better than the original.

Here are a few observations we thought we'd share:

  • The start/finish area is awesome, with a lot of trees, shade, and a nice grassy area to hang out at before and after the race
  • Very cool swim start, running and jumping/diving/flipping/whatever you wanna do off a dock (one by one) similar to East Canyon
  • The swim finishes near some trees that should be easy to sight, and there's a very smooth swim out up a small boat ramp (very flat, not a steep ramp)
  • The water level is extremely high, and must be a nice temp... we didn't test the water ourselves, but there were a lot of people out swimming in just life jackets (and we presume/hope bathing suits)
  • As TriUtah notes, like the original course the transition area is a little rocky, so you may want to throw something on your feet as you exit the water. That said, probably not a necessity

roughly mile 2 and 22 of the bike course
  • Similar bike course as prior years, just continuing ~1.5 miles further before hitting the turnaround
  • Road conditions are vastly improved from years past. Like butter for the first (and last) 6 miles. In between there are some brief sections of chip seal, but overall so much better than it used to be on that main frontage road

  • The 2-loop run (for the Olympic) is an improvement in our opinion... it's easier to mentally break down the course and there should be an increased amount of low fives, friendly banter, and overall camaraderie on the course
  • Again, the finish area and post-race atmosphere will be sweet!
