Santiago to SLC: Welcome Colomba Nahum!

If you haven't heard, 2 junior elite triathletes have recently joined us all the way from Chile! Please join us in welcoming Roberto Porras and Colomba Nahum, who are training under the tutelage of Wes Johnson and team BAM.

We posted Roberto's interview last week, and now it's Colomba's turn. She got many of the same questions as Roberto, as we wanted to get her perspective as well.

How did you get into triathlon as your athletic focus at such a young age?

When I was little I tried sports such as tennis and golf. I also tried multiple school sports, and my favorite was hockey. It was ultimately a big decision for me choosing between triathlon and hockey.

At my school, I had a classmate who practiced triathlon. From the moment he told me about it, I was very excited to start. Three sports in one was a dream! Throughout the years, I have had great experiences in triathlon and I hope to have more experiences training here in Salt Lake City.

What led to the huge move to Salt Lake, and when did you arrive? Do you have a host family here?

I just arrived three weeks ago. Roberto and his dad have hosted me during this time, and will continue to until I start my studies.

My two big reasons moving to Salt Lake were triathlon and university. In Chile it's impossible to practice triathlon at a high level while studying, and to succeed in a professional career.

What was your family’s reaction to the move, were they 100% on board?

My family has always supported me in every decision. And if moving to Salt Lake was going to help me grow as an athlete, they were absolutely on board.

Had you been to the States before? What were the biggest culture shocks you experienced when you moved here?

I have been to the US many times. It's always shocking to me how polite people are, and of course all the opportunities for everything. This is my first time in Salt Lake. The biggest culture shocks I have experienced is how calm and nice people are, considering the number of people, traffic, etc.

So clearly you knew Roberto beforehand in Chile?

In Chile we were part of the same triathlon team. As we were part of the same group we shared many moments and events together.

Are you digging “American” food or is it disgusting? What’s the best & worst thing you’ve eaten that you hadn’t tried before?

I eat very healthy, so definitely prefer home cooked meals. I love having a good piece of meat or salmon, more than a piece of pizza or burger.

Being 18, are you attending high school here like Roberto or have you already graduated? If attending school here, are you competing on any high school teams like he is?

I have already graduated in my home country. So I will be competing only as part of the BAM team.

With regards to triathlon, what is your biggest strength to weakness of the 3 disciplines?

Swimming has always been my weakness. Wes will have a lot of work with me haha, but I know I will improve a lot, especially my catch. In the last two years I got involved in trail running, which helped running become a huge strength.

How long will you be with us, and what are your race plans for next year?

I will be in Salt Lake until I start my studies. This off-season I'll build on the base I have built during the last years, and train properly. I also need to recover from a foot problem that has kept me from running much over the last 3 months.

My race plans as of now are racing Clermont and the South American Championships, both in March 2017.

What are your triathlon goals for the future?

Right know I’m thinking a focus on long course races, which I think is a good fit for me. But when talking about these upcoming years, I want to race more, and focus on my last year as a junior athlete. I have a lot to improve in short course racing.

Santiago to SLC: Welcome Roberto Porras!

If you haven't heard, 2 junior elite triathletes with Olympic aspirations have recently joined us all the way from Chile! Please join us in welcoming Roberto Porras and Colomba Nahum, who are training under the tutelage of Wes Johnson and team BAM.

Reach out to them (on Facebook, etc), and let's help them feel at home!

First up is Roberto, to be followed by Colomba soon.

How did you get into triathlon as your athletic focus at such a young age?

Well as a kid I did a lot of sports for my school like swimming, rugby, soccer. Also I did swimming aside from my school, my dad when I was little boy, got me into swimming. I didn’t like it at first but as years past I start to get more in to it and start to love it.

However, was racquetball what I start competing more serious until 2008 when I won world racquetball championship in Tempe Arizona.

One day my dad who was running marathons arrived home with Triathlon bike and I felt in love, so I decided to give on a go. I start running for my school on occasionally cross country races. From there to here has been a blur and a blast I’ve enjoyed every moment since.

What led to the huge move from Santiago to Salt Lake, and when did you arrive? Is it true you’re living at BAM Headquarters, training round the clock?

The thing that led me to come here is obviously the facilities there are here to train are world class, obviously Wesley has put a great plan to achieve our goals. Also that I want to study a professional career while I focused on triathlon and for me to do that in Chile was impossible, and here there are tremendous opportunities to get in to great school while you still focus on Elite level triathlon.

HAHA no I’m not living in the bam headquarters but we are definitely training hard, so we can obtain our goals this season.

anti-gravity treadmill @ BAM Headquarters
What was your family’s reaction to the move, were they 100% on board?

Yeah my Dad and Mom are fully on board I actually moved with my dad here. They are both really supportive with me and understand me, they give me everything I need.

a true triathlete
Had you been to the States before? What were the biggest culture shocks you experienced when you moved here?

Yes, I have been here many times to compete and just to visit. Last time in IOWA Des Moines for Triathlon Pan-American championship in last July 2016. The culture shocks I have experienced are tremendous from people being so nice and polite, and the opportunities you have to train hard and do what you love every day.

Jazz game with his dad
How tall is the average Chilean and how tall are you?

I think the average Chilean is like 5’4 that’s very small haha. I’m actually 6’3.

Are you digging “American” food or is it disgusting? What’s the best & worst thing you’ve eaten that you hadn’t tried before?

I definitely love American food I love your burgers and pizzas haha but I do miss a home cooked meal from Chile, but we can still do it here so its all good.

I ran into Wes at the state high school cross country meet at Sugarhouse Park last month and he told me about you. What did you think about racing for Olympus, and how did the season go for you?

state champs!
Oh I absolutely love racing for Olympus we have such nice facilities to train on, also great guys on the team that run as fast as you can humanly go, and a great xc coach.

This season couldn’t be more great we won our region meet with a perfect score, and we won the 4A Utah state. Right know we are heading to Arizona to compete on the Nike meet, so we can qualify for Nationals.

With regards to triathlon, what is your biggest strength to weakness of the 3 disciplines?

I think now it has become a huge strength the swim. Wes and me have put a lot of work on it so we can get out of the swim in front pack, and we have been racing on the swim meets with Olympus swim team, so we can achieve that, and last meet I made the qualifying time for the 200 free for State.

Olympus pool
How long will you be with us, and what are your race plans for next year?

My plan is being here for a long time, its hard for me thinking of moving from here I absolutely love It.

Race plans we know we are going to do World Championships in Rotterdam as the big objective, we start with Sarasota and Clermont early March, South American championship mid-march and Pan-American championship around June. We are going to be racing as much as we can so I can be prepared as best as possible.

What are your triathlon goals for the future?

My triathlons goals for the future are train hard, enjoy the sport, grow as a person and hopefully go to Tokyo 2020

Locals at Ironman Arizona

Unfortunately it's a decent road trip to all of 'em, but technically our neighbors to the north (CDA), east (Boulder), and south (Arizona) all host Ironmans. That's pretty cool.

This weekend is IMAZ, and as you might expect there's a strong Utah contingency... in total 79 age groupers and 2 professionals (Skye Moench & Ashley Paulson).

Good luck all!!

Here are a few on the list that we've featured in the past:

Local Pro Skye Moench - Los Cabos 70.3 Race Report

In case you missed it, local pro Skye Moench recently took on Ironman 70.3 Los Cabos... check out her report!

I’ve been fortunate to have pretty smooth races in terms of mechanical, nutritional, or any other sort of major errors. Los Cabos 70.3 was my first race that had some mechanical hiccups, and honestly, I’m glad I finally experienced some problems because it’s good practice to work through things you can’t control. Our first night in Cabo, Matt talked me into setting up my bike before going to bed. I started setting up my bike in the condo and quickly realized…

So how'd she do?? Continue reading on skyemoench.com

Offseason Inspiration: BAM Headquarters

Need a little offseason inspiration?? Here are some pictures from my visit to BAM's Headquarters on Sat, along with information about their indoor cycling camps. Awesome vibe!

The first session begins tomorrow (Monday 11/7) but it's not too late to get involved.

In talking with BAM's Wes Johnson, this program was the foundation of 7 Kona qualifiers in 2016, in addition to multiple Rio paralympians, professional triathletes and beginners alike.

More info:

BAM coaches Andrew Stasinos & Wes Johnson

Jorge de Amorim Filho (AKA Doctor Delicious) & FPRO Skye Moench
putting in extra time for upcoming Ironman Arizona

Andrew Stasinos piercing Tyler Deskins ear... or maybe doing a lactate threshold test, which he explains a bit in the video below

As was the case with SLTC, unfortunately some people on the list weren't around on Sat... but I was able to give out awards to a few speedsters.

Haley Tadler chose a beanie (if I remember correctly), but I failed to get a picture of her :(

Jen Johnson - F3034 AG Champ

Keate Avery - M2529 AG Champ

Megan Foley - top ranked overall female

Offseason Inspiration: SLTC Kickr Lab

Need a little offseason inspiration?? I had the chance to check out both SLTC's and BAM's indoor cycling programs this morning, which was really fun.

Shortly before 7AM I walked into a room dripping with sweat, pain and agony, just how we like it, as SLTC was in the middle of a 20-min FTP test. That said there were definitely positive vibes from the group!

Here are some pictures, along with information about the program if you'd like to join.

Location: 556 E 12300 S Draper, UT 84020 (Located in the Precision Dance Center)

Items you need: bike, cycling trainer, bike shoes, towel, water/nutrition, and good attitude

Items you want: Heart Rate Monitor, Cadence meter, Smart Phone

Items not needed: Bad attitudes and Quitters

"FTP tests are hard. We have only had one person throw up but everyone always feels like they want to . That's good it means you went hard. What we don't want is you to throw up in the first 5 mins. Pace the FTP test as best as possible. You want the line to steady increase and try to leave everything on the test. It's not best to go as hard as you can the last min. You should have a steady increase. Most ppl start off way to hard and burn out. My advice would be start off easy then build. Break it up into 4 x 5min intervals each interval go harder. This helps make time go by faster. After the FTP test your results will help us build your zones which then are used for all future workouts and to get a baseline. We will retest every 4-6 weeks."

Unfortunately some SLTC members on our list weren't present, but I was able to give awards to the following awesome people:

Jeff Bosch - raced 6x

Afton Ware Swensen - raced 8x

Gerald Brady - raced 7x (forgot to ask
him to rock his Utah Tri Buzz headband)
