Interview with SLTC President Adam Lee

We've been meaning for a while now to check in with SLTC President, Mr. Adam Lee. As he prepares to do battle at Ironman Santa Rosa this weekend, we couldn't think of a better time.

Good luck to Adam and any other locals racing this Sat!

You’ve been at the helm for about 2 years now, correct? What have been the most rewarding and challenging aspects of leading a large club like SLTC?

Being the President of the largest triathlon club in the Midwest United States is one of the most rewarding roles I have ever had. The opportunity I have to assist so many people in their triathlon aspirations is hard to put into words. Of course the club is designed around the grass roots of the community and is supported in whole by volunteers who are willing to freely give of their time. I, along with others, am fortunate to have a stable career that allows me to spend so much of my free time on club activities. The size of our club naturally provides opportunities for special unique discounts on services and products related to the sport along with coaching. We are not in this business to make money, but to provide the best overall value to the members who are dedicated and active in the club. I will continue in this role until the Founder/Owner feels it is time for me to move on.

What other club members comprise team leadership and what are their roles?

  • R Adam Lee, President
  • Rory and Courtney Duckworth, Founder/Owner and Head Coach
  • Mike Humphries, Operations Director
  • Karen Hodges, Communications Director
  • Nate Last, Webmaster
  • Kristen Cambridge, Event Coordinator
  • April Steck, Vendor and Product Discount Coordinator
There are also 11 certified coaches that together cover all aspects of triathlon.

What are your biggest team objectives for 2019?

We will continue to focus on what has brought success in the past…and success to our club is not about podiums and being faster than others. Our club focus is helping all levels of a triathlete to be successful in whatever their goal might be; finishing a sprint, riding a bike for the first time, learning how to swim freestyle, etc. We will continue to focus on volunteering at local triathlons in order to assist the RD’s in their efforts – all who have participated in a triathlon know the value of volunteers – which is why we had several members at every local event in 2018 giving of their time. We will continue to increase the knowledge base and expertise of our coaches in order to provide more free clinics across the Wasatch front.

What big races are you guys doing as a club?

The SLTC always has a presence at each race and consider all events a “club” event. We of course have events that draw more members like STG, Oceanside and Spudman – each will have 60 to 120 members. This year we have over 30 members participating in Ironman Santa Rosa – it will be a fun day of using the IM tracker. Daybreak is a fun local event as it is right in the center of the valley – and we always have a huge party at my house after that ALL are always invited.

What are your race plans for 2019? Any favorite local races?

I will continue my schedule of one 70.3 even years and one 140.6 in odd years. This year it is IMSR. Then I will participate in Daybreak as I live there and then volunteer at as many local events as my schedule will allow – usually providing SAG support on the bike course with the SLTCTRUCK.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I believe triathlon is beating the demons of life and fighting through the challenges that hit us every day. The SLTC provides much more than a meager discount on a race or product, we provide a supported resource and group of people who are willing to give of themselves to help others succeed.

We started a Patreon account (link below) with the hope of raising a few bucks towards awards & swag for athletes of all abilities in our tri community. We've given out a lot over the past 2 years, but would like to continue to expand our offerings & the volume we can do.

If you enjoy Utah Tri Buzz and would like to pitch in, any amount would be greatly appreciated... (there may be something in it for you as well!)

We're also always grateful for talented people who contribute in terms of time... let us know if you'd like to be part of the Utah Tri Buzz team.
