MOST IMPROVED TRIATHLETE AWARDS 2022!

Very excited to announce the 5th annual Utah Tri Buzz MOST IMPROVED TRIATHLETE awards!

The Most Improved awards aren't a perfect science, but it's our best effort to recognize people who stepped up their game this season on the local scene.

The methodology is pure math, comparing everyone's top 3 results in the Utah Triathlon Championship Series from 2022 to 2021.

As an example, let's say Jane Triathlete's best 3 races in 2021 were 60th out of 100 (60%) at Series race 1, 80th out of 200 (40%) at Series race 2, and 100th out of 500 (20%) at Series race 3. The average of those 3 results = 40%.

Ms. Triathlete went to work in the offseason and it paid off. Her best 3 local races this year were a 40%, 30%, and 20%, averaging to 30%... a 10% improvement from last year. In other words, she improved her average placing by 10 spots for every 100 participants.

Keep in mind that these and most of our other awards will continue to be based on the UTAH TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, which gives some structure and standardization to the process.

Once again this year, however, we also reached out to leaders at local clubs to see if any nominations came to mind... we got 5 names back, so congrats to these folks as well!

So without further adieu, below are the M.I.T.'s for 2022! Please share with friends on the list!

Utah Triathlon Championship Series 2023!

Based on 2022 participation, below is a summary of the 2023 Utah Triathlon Championship Series.

The lineup is still subject to change, but here's what we know as of now. Scroll down for additional details as well as registration links.

Showing up at 3 or more of these races qualifies you for swag & season awards. Get out and race!

Overview
  • The 2023 UTCS consists of 10 events from Mar - Oct, in addition to a State Champs race & party welcoming all abilities and experience levels
  • The State Champs venue rotates annually. Brineman (Oly) hosted in 2018, Salem (Sprint) in 2019, the Bear Lake Brawl (Half) in 2020, Daybreak (Oly) in 2021, Echo (Oly) in 2022, and TriUtah's East Canyon (Oly) will play host in 2023!
  • Like prior years, most events in the series will have ONE distance that counts towards rankings, season awards, etc. For example, the Olympic distance is the official series race for Jordanelle.
  • The intent of this is two-fold: 1) it builds prestige for the official Series races and a standardized process for season awards 2) there's less "pressure," no results analysis, rankings implications, etc, for the non-series distance(s). This would be a good option for someone who just wants to come out and enjoy the day, someone coming back from injury, using the race as a training day, etc.
  • We hope this format will continue to grow participation across the board, as people can self-select races according to their goals and what they want to get out of race day
  • That said... NEW for 2023, for Echo & Brineman, both the Olympic AND Half distances will count as UTCS races - for example, the Echo Olympic is a legendary race with a long history, but the newly created Echo Half will also be a marquee race and is deserving of a spot in the lineup!
  • The breakdown of 2023 Series races is 1 Sprint, 8 Olympics, and 4 Halfs (70.3)

group training rides are the best

Based on 2022 participation, here are the races comprising the Championship Series for 2023:

1) March 25: ICEBREAKER - SPRINT

2) May 6: IRONMAN 70.3 ST. GEORGE

3) May 20: SAND HOLLOW - OLYMPIC

4) May 27: DAYBREAK - OLYMPIC

5) June 24: JORDANELLE - OLYMPIC

6) July 15:  ECHO - OLYMPIC & HALF!

7) August 12: EAST CANYON - OLYMPIC (STATE CHAMPS!)

8) Sep 8: BRINEMAN - OLYMPIC & HALF!

9) Sep 16: KOKOPELLI - OLYMPIC

10) Sep 16: BEAR LAKE BRAWL - HALF

11) Oct 28: SOUTHERN UTAH TRI - OLYMPIC

Structure (same as prior years)
  • Similar to European soccer (e.g. England's Premier League), the Championship Series will include a system of "promotion" and "relegation"
  • This means that races NOT in the Championship Series one year can be "promoted" into it the following year if they out-draw races currently in the series
  • This occurred in 2019, with the now extinct Dino Triathlon earning a spot in the Series based on the # of participants it drew
  • In that example, the race(s) currently in the series would get "relegated" AKA bumped out for the following year
  • This way, the tri community as a whole decides what races make up the Championship Series any given year… it's up to RD's to promote their races and athletes to support the races they choose
Awards (same as prior years)
  • Utah Tri Buzz rankings, Age Group awards, Championship Belt Holders, Most Improved Triathletes, Rookies of the Year, the 2023 WALL OF FAME (3+ Series races participants) and other swag for the season will be based on the Championship Series (average of top 3 races like previous years)
  • We also want to continue driving a local culture of volunteering at races & supporting each other; those who go above and beyond will be recognized for their efforts!
  • You don't have to race the East Canyon State Champs race to qualify for season awards. However, like prior years the rankings system will include a 5% points bonus for those who do race the State Champs

In summary, will be fun!  Support the local scene!
