We started a Patreon account (link below) with the hope of raising a few bucks towards awards & swag for athletes of all abilities in our tri community. We've given out a lot over the past 8 years, but would like to continue to expand our offerings & the volume we can do.
If you enjoy Utah Tri Buzz and would like to pitch in, any amount would be greatly appreciated... (there may be something in it for you as well!)
Very excited to announce the 8th annual Utah Tri Buzz MOST IMPROVED TRIATHLETE awards!
The Most Improved awards aren't a perfect science, but it's our best effort to recognize people who stepped up their game this season on the local scene. The methodology is pure math, comparing everyone's top 3 results in the Utah Triathlon Championship Series from 2024 to 2023. As an example, let's say Jane Triathlete's best 3 races in 2023 were 60th out of 100 (60%) at Series race 1, 80th out of 200 (40%) at Series race 2, and 100th out of 500 (20%) at Series race 3. The average of those 3 results = 40%.
Ms. Triathlete went to work in the offseason and it paid off. Her best 3 local races this past season were a 40%, 30%, and 20%, averaging to 30%... a 10% improvement year over year. In other words, she improved her average placing by 10 spots for every 100 participants. Keep in mind that these and most of our other awards will continue to be based on the UTAH TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES, which gives some structure and standardization to the process.
Once again this year, however, we also reached out to leaders at local clubs to see if any nominations came to mind... we got a few names back, so congrats to these folks as well! So without further adieu, below are the M.I.T.'s for 2024! Please share with friends on the list!
"one by one I'll knock you out"

With the last Utah Triathlon Championship Series race now behind us, it's time for final season rankings, aka the WALL OF FAME. Congrats to everyone who qualified by racing 3+ UTCS races!
***If you are on this list, we have some Utah Tri Buzz swag for you! We'll be reaching out in the very near future.***
We stand & applaud everyone who has qualified for the final rankings. Regardless of individual rank, these are all people who enjoy the friendly competition and camaraderie of the Utah Triathlon Championship Series and who support the local scene.
Think about it, how many people stayed in bed while you were out testing your limits??
How many others are active, yet too chicken to ever toe a start line??
Kudos to everyone in the rankings... you're fighters who are strong in both body & mind!
Lastly, keep in mind this is for FUN. The intention is to build some hype and intrigue throughout the local tri season, as we've strived to do since 2016... please don't take it too seriously.
Like prior years, rankings have been updated throughout the season:
Round 1 (Jun): 2 race minimum (average of your top 2 races)
Round 2 (Sep): 2 race minimum (average of your top 2 races)
Round 3 (end of season): 3 race minimum (average of your top 3 races)
* These final rankings will be the basis for several “Most Improved Triathlete" and other season awards, not just for Championship Belt Holders and other elite-level athletes.
* Like prior years, we take the AVERAGE of everyone’s top 3 series races for these final rankings… this provides some incentive to get out and race often, as you can only help yourself by racing more. For example, if you had an off day, or even a DNF, that result will shake out of your top 3 average if you raced 4+ times.
* We use your Overall % to calculate the rankings (which is shown in all the individual race “Results Breakdowns” we post). This is simply how you placed vs. the field - if you placed 60th out of 100 at a race, that’s 60%. If you placed 80th out of 200 at another, that’s 40%. In this case those two then average to 50%.
Your 50% average would then be stacked up to other qualifying triathletes for the rankings.
* For people who really like to get into the details, for St. George 70.3 we exclude the non-Utah pro field in the calculation, which helps everyone's "score" (as you're only compared to other age groupers). In addition, the State Champs race each year includes a bonus of 5 percentile points. For example, if you finished 40th out of 100 at the State Champs race, your "score" would be 35% as opposed to 40%.
