SLTC Kickoff Party - Mike Reilly?!?

The Salt Lake Tri Club's annual kickoff party is fast approaching... we checked in with Event Coordinator Kristen Cambridge to get the full scoop!

Everyone is welcome to attend, whether an SLTC member or not. Hope to see you there!

So we hear SLTC is hosting a huge kickoff party in two weeks, with a lot of great stuff going on. What can you tell us about the event?

We are having our kickoff party Wednesday April 17, 2019 from 5:30pm-9:00pm at the University Guest House Ballroom. We will have food trucks, a huge charity raffle benefiting Operation Underground Railroad, local vendors and race directors from the triathlon scene, and the main event, a guest speaker that people will come from miles around to hear. Mike Reilly the announcer for Ironman!!!!! We are beyond excited!. It will be the event of the season! You definitely won’t want to miss it!

That is quite the evening! How are you able to pull off such a large scale event?

We have some amazingly talented individuals in the tri club that volunteer their time and talents to help make this all possible. What makes this club special is so many people are willing to get involved and help out whenever there is a need. We really have a great community of athletes and it is something really great to be a part of. Together we are able to pull off some pretty amazing things including this kickoff party!

So Mike Reilly is your guest speaker? Cool! How did you pull that off, and what can the athletes look forward to hearing from him?

We can’t reveal all our secrets, but let's just say we simply wanted one of the biggest names in Triathlon and this has been a dream speaker idea for Rory Duckworth for years. We chose Mike because he has shared in so many Ironman journeys and been the person to exclaim the accomplishment of those journeys. We are really excited about him and it will be an Inspirational night!

With 30 years at the microphone announcing Ironman finishers, you can expect to hear a lot of great stories and experiences. It will definitely be a night to remember. A lot of triathletes dream of hearing Mike Reilly call their name when they cross that finish line, so to hear from him for an evening will be pretty special. Plus, you will have a chance to get a signed copy of his book, and a picture with him at our photobooth.

If you don’t know who Mike Reilly is you can find more info on him here: https://mikereilly.net/about/

Tell us more about the charity raffle. Why did you pick Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R) as your benefiting charity?

This organization rescues children from sex traffickers and we couldn’t think of a more worthy cause. There are over 2 million children being trafficked worldwide and it is a problem on a huge scale, but it is something we can directly impact as a club with our donations.

How does O.U.R. operate? How will the donations help?

O.U.R. currently partners with domestic and international governments to perform undercover sting operations to rescue kids from sex traffickers, and prosecute the offenders. Once rescued, the kids are given aftercare services including relocation to a safe living environment, counseling, schooling, and vocational training. They have had amazing results in the last four years, with around 2,000 kids rescued and 1,100 traffickers put behind bars.

Editor's note: you can learn more about the organization here.

Because of their success, new foreign and domestic governments are requesting O.U.R.’s assistance, but they currently need more funding to expand. This is why we are raising money. They have jump teams ready to go and kids ready to be rescued, but they just need the financial resources to make it happen. It is amazing to know that we as a club can impact that with the money we raise. We can make a real difference freeing children that are trapped in the commercial sex trade. We have a club goal to raise $10,000 this year and with your help we can pull that off!

Wow, that definitely sounds like a worthwhile cause! Tell us more about how the charity raffle works. How can people win prizes and/or donate? What kind of prizes can people win?

We will have a variety of things people can do related to O.U.R. and the club to earn tickets that we will be announcing on our Facebook page in the next few weeks. You can earn the most tickets through donating financially to our campaign page. The more you donate, the more tickets you will earn, and the more you can win. Here is a link to our campaign page where you can donate. https://my.ourrescue.org/fundraisers/the-endurance-abolitionist-project

You will definitely want to donate, because there will be lots of great prizes you can win. We will have everything from race entries, race nutrition, Rudy Project helmets, Wahoo fitness, and other triathlon products, gift baskets, hotel stays, and anything else that people would like to donate. We will have local vendors from the tri scene there, and many of them will be donating items for the raffle. If you would like to donate a prize, contact us at contact@saltlaketriclub.com

Anything else you would like say about the kickoff party?

The Salt Lake Tri Club knows how to throw an epic party, so make sure to mark your calendars for the event of the season! This will be a chance to hear from Mike Reilly (the Iconic voice of Ironman), socialize with SLTC members, meet new people in the tri scene, see old friends, join the club, meet local sponsors, win tons of great prizes, and help make a difference in the fight against human trafficking. Everyone in the tri community is invited regardless of whether you are a SLTC club member or not. We can’t wait! See you on April 17th!

If you enjoy Utah Tri Buzz and would like to pitch in, any amount would be greatly appreciated... (there may be something in it for you as well!)

We're also always grateful for talented people who contribute in terms of time... let us know if you'd like to be part of the Utah Tri Buzz team.
