If you enjoy Utah Tri Buzz and would like to pitch in, any amount would be greatly appreciated... (there may be something in it for you as well!)

We're also always grateful for talented people who contribute in terms of time... let us know if you'd like to be part of the Utah Tri Buzz team.

Rookies of the Year Awards 2019!

Congrats to our 3 Rookie of the Year award winners for the 2019 season. This is the inaugural year for these awards, but we'll definitely continue them going forward. It's great to see new people getting involved with triathlon... make sure to always encourage newcomers to our sport, and be on the lookout for potential ROY nominations for 2020!

BAILEY & MADELINE BANTA

This power duo raced together at Icebreaker, St. George 70.3, and the Jordanelle Olympic, qualifying for the 2019 WALL OF FAME in their first year in the sport. Along the way they also threw down some impressive results, both finishing the season ranked 2nd in their respective age groups (Clydesdale & F2529).

Congrats!

MATT DYER

Matt was nominated by a gentleman named Lenny Thomas... read below for his inspiring rationale for the nomination.

Dear Award Committee Members,
It is with great pleasure that I nominate Matt Dyer of Heber City, UT as one of the Utah Tri Buzz rookies of the year.

I first came to know Matt through the Wasatch Aquatic Center in Heber. Matt decided he wanted to get involved in triathlons at the start of this year and had no prior competitive swimming experience. After seeing how much he struggled to swim 100M, I wondered how quickly he would stop showing up to practices and give up on his goal. To my surprise, he didn't. He stuck with it day in and day out.

Ultimately Matt participated in, and completed, his first Sprint tri (East Canyon), Olympic tri (Echo), and Half-Ironman (Brineman). I think quite an impressive feat for <9 months of training in the sport and all the other demands on his time.

I think what makes Matt's accomplishments this year even more impressive is that in addition to his family life, Matt is part of a biotechnology startup based in Connecticut. Startups are very demanding, but what makes this especially difficult is his position requires him to travel about 50% of the time all around the world.

However, even with all of his travels, day in and day out, he was up at 5:30AM to get his workout done no matter where he was in the world. He said sometimes it requires some very creative use of limited resources.

Matt's commitment I think is a great example and motivation to many of how setting goals and making sacrifices to work towards those goals, enables us to do incredible things.

I think Matt represents the commitment it takes to be successful in the competitive and collaborative world of triathlons and would be a shining example of a Utah Tri Buzz Rookie of the Year award.
